a hero dies in afghanistan
sadly, this headline can now be written daily. but, this particular story has touched me deeply, since it was our friend. he was killed in afghanistan on friday. the scenario is devastating and hard for me to wrap my head around. please read below for some details and please consider donating to his nonprofit organization, in his memory and to remember all those who sacrifice their freedom each day. i don’t ever solicit, but this means a lot to me.

benjamin sklaver, 32, an army reservist, was on patrol friday in muscheh, afghanistan, when his unit was ambushed, possibly by a suicide bomber. after spending 2007 building water infrastructure in africa with the reserves, sklaver returned to atlanta energized to do more. he started a nonprofit group called the clearwater initiative that has provided clean drinking water to populations affected by natural or man-made humanitarian emergencies. the projects are focused on conflict-affected areas of northern uganda. the company had brought clean drinking water in the form of wells to more than 6,500 people since 2007. the company’s goal is to “directly impact the lives of more than 10,000 people by 2012.” it doesn’t cost very much money, $1,000 or $2,000, to build a well … that supports a village for an indefinite period. and, this is what he was passionate about.
he was called for his second tour of duty in the spring and was deployed to afghanistan where he was also working on building infrastructure, enabling villagers to resist the insurgency. villagers could return to their old village if they had clean water there.
please consider donating here in his memory and to continue his work and passion.

shower me with baby love.
we have been so grateful to have two of the most amazing baby showers for our little jack-a-roo. it’s overwhelming to think of how much everyone did, and i don’t quite know how to explain what it means to me, which is why i think i was putting off writing this post. i wish every baby could come into this world as fortunate as baby jack.
here’s a peek at some of the fabulousness from our showers:

loved ones
oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person; having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but to pour them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, knowing that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then, with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away.

go cats!
we spent the past two weekends cheering for our davidson wildcats at two very exciting (well, one exciting and one exciting BUT disappointing) basketball games. the first of our two weekends was spent in birmingham with my parents. the four of us cheered LOUDLY as davidson pulled off a very close win against a sold-out crowd at samford.

this past weekend, we were in charlotte and davidson with some of our college best friends—what a FUN weekend we had! it was so much fun to be back in north carolina (the residency destination talk has begun…again!) and although davidson lost in a CLOSE game, we had a blast catching up with best friends and meeting baby elizabeth!

and, to make the situation even better, all of this davidson basketball watching has afforded me the pleasure of cheering, in person, for my favorite player, #42 ben allison!

if anyone sees a shirt bearing a nickname for english ben, like barr’s white lobster or curry’s steff-in shirt found at a square game.com —PLEASE let me know. i am dying to have one! and, if you are reading this and do t-shirt design, i am digging the thought of a prince benjamin tee.
david and i don’t think we are very good luck for the team, so our attendance at the socon tournament is “to be determined”…
with or without us on the sidelines, good luck cats! here’s wishing for another successful ride through march madness!
’tis the season
as usual, our christmas time in florida was most joyful! this year, in particular, we had TONS of fun!

over 5 days, we visited with family and even some dear high school friends,

ate at jerry’s drive-in (twice!), went to a christmas concert at the church where we were married, had 4 christmas celebrations (and got lots of nice new stuff),

shopped at some cute pensacola gift boutiques and at joe patti’s (of course), went out 3 times with cousins and aunts and uncles (SO fun!!!), AND attended a reheasal dinner, a wedding, and a christening.

hope your holidays have been as great as ours. here’s to a fabulous end to 2008!
remembering the brave little girl
today, we hosted our first annual kentucky derby party. of course, we made mint juleps with fresh spring time mint from the farmer’s market, indulged in many great tasting finger foods, and celebrated the wonderful weather of a may afternoon. it was a lovely day shared by a fabulous group of friends. the highlight of the day came shortly after the completion of the horse race, when the ladies participated in a hat parade! hamilton, the only participant to sport a homemade hat, won our contest and got herself a big bottle of bourbon.
the tragedy of the little girl horse did not go unnoticed, making the memory of the day bittersweet.
here’s to eight belles, great friends, beautiful weather, fun hats, tasty drinks, and yummy food.
