happy birthday to my sweets!

sweets, this is for you on your special day.  instead of writing it in a card or handing it to you in a note, i thought i would make it a post so everyone else could read and see how beautiful this poem is.

“Our Union” by Hafiz:

Our union is like this: You feel cold, so I reach for a blanket to cover our shivering feet.
A hunger comes into your body, so I run to my garden and start digging potatoes.
You asked for a few words of comfort and guidance, and I quickly kneel by your side offering you a whole book as a gift.
You ache with loneliness one night so much you weep, and I say here is a rope, tie it around me, I will be your companion for life.

i love you.  happy birthday!  xxoxo- s

we are twelve!

to my sweets,

happy twelve years!  our years together have taken us to davidson, france, italy, travels around europe, boston, and atlanta plus many, many trips full of fun and adventure!  we have made lifelong friends, earned degrees, gotten hitched, started careers, witnessed the marriages of many of our dear friends, become godparents and aunt/uncle, and now wait to welcome the next pea in our pod this fall.  what an amazing life we have!  and, i would absolutely not want to share it with anyone but you.

you are my everything.  i love you so much!

necklaces

how great are these necklaces??!  i am loving them.  you can build your own, adding charms as major life events happen.  i know that they are insanely expensive and my rational mind tells me “no”, but can’t they be justified when you only get one charm at a time?  if i were to indulge in one today- i would choose a gold dog bone, a silver disk with a gold frame that reads “s +d” and on the back 12.31.04, and a pretty stone, perhaps a large aquamarine with a gold wire.  david, we will be “5″ this year…this is a great gift idea!

wish i had a reason to use these photographers.  david, could we fake a wedding???  there work is so beautiful and so unique.  attention to details are paid even to the picture packaging….

cheese and chocolate = love dinner

we had a fondue valentine’s dinner at home…it was so much fun and SO yummy!  since the large number of fondue recipes out there can be overwhelming to sift through, i thought i’d share the ones we used since they were easy AND delicious.  and, i found it difficult to choose which foods to select for dipping (so many recipes suggest the typical bread, fruit, sponge cake trio), so i wanted to share which foods we chose to eat with our fondue- we learned that the food can really make the meal.

cheese fondue

cheese fondue, recipe for 2 (with plenty leftover):

foods for dipping- roasted brussels sprouts, kielbasa, grilled zucchini, and country french bread

toss 1/2 pound of shredded gruyere cheese with 1 1/2 tablespoons of unbleached all-purpose flour in a large bowl.  rub the interior of your fondue pot with 1 clove of minced garlic.  place pot on the stove over medium heat and add 1 cup dry white wine.  bring to a simmer and add the cheese mixture, one handful at a time.  stir in 1/4 teaspoon of grated nutmeg.

stir over low heat until smooth and cheese is melted and bubbling.  transfer to your table stand.  dip and enjoy!

of course, sadie loved it too!

chocolate fondue, again recipe for 2 (with plenty leftover):

foods for dipping- strawberries, cream cheese pound cake, and sliced apples

gently melt together over medium heat a 1/2 pound of dark chocolate, 2 tablespoons of half and half, and 1 tablespoon grand marnier.  once melted and smooth, transfer to your table stand.  dip and enjoy!

our wedding quilt

our wedding quilt is here!  thank goodness our quilter emailed me pictures when she was finished making it,  because i would have been blown away if i had just opened the package without an appropriate warning of how fantastic this quilt is.  LOOK!!!…

full wedding quilt picture

what a treasure, huh?  i love it!!!  it’s absolutely perfect!  she did the most amazingly wonderful job (and in record time- it took her 4 days!)!  even if you are not in the market for a quilt, you should really check out her shop, lmk quilts, on etsy.   her creations may inspire you to reconsider.

here’s a detail photo…

detail of wedding quilt

we are planning to hang it (with the sleeve attached on the back solely for this purpose) but are unsure of where.  perhaps in the guest bedroom- it’s quite big, so we need a pretty empty wall.  i hope we find the perfect spot, because once its displayed, its loveliness and all the love spread through the messages from our family and friends can be cherished daily.

what would your baby look like?

how many of you have wondered what your future baby will look like???  c’mon, i know it’s a lot of you!  well, now you can see with vw’s routan babymaker!  it’s hysterical (and a little odd)…you should really check it out:  http://www.vw.com/vwhype/babymaker/en/us/ (sorry my link doesn’t seem to be recognized as a website, but that is the correct web address).  all you do is upload pictures (they have to be ones with no smile, no glasses, and no hat) of the mom and the dad and “make” a baby!

look what david and i made:

cute, huh???!!!

signature wedding quilt squares

instead of asking guests to sign a traditional guest book at our wedding, my mom had the very lovely idea of asking guests to write messages on pieces of fabric quilting squares.  four years later, the squares were still sitting in the same bag up in the attic patiently awaiting the day that they would be crafted into something nice.  i decided that the time had come…four years was long enough to wait.  it was time to do something with the signature squares.

wedding signature squares

i spent a few weeks “interviewing” quilters, making the messages from all of our fabulous wedding guests dark enough to read from afar, picking out fabrics, and looking at LOTS of quilts.  i found a very nice and thoughtful lady who seems to understand and appreciate my vision for the project perfectly.  at this very moment, she is piecing together my fabrics and creating what i hope will be the best quilt i have ever seen.  i am so looking forward to seeing the final product!  stay tuned for pictures…

anniversary collar

sweet lew bought sadie a new gator collar  as one of my anniversary presents.  since he bought it the day of the dog attack, she wasn’t able to model it for me on her neck until this week…still in plenty of time for gator game day!!!

GO GATORS!!!

go gators!

it’s been four years…

as the clock on the dashboard changed to 12:00am to signify the start of new year’s eve, i leaned over and whispered “happy anniversary” to my sweets who was sitting in the driver’s seat.  we were sharing a meal of chicken mcnuggets and fries (mcdonal’ds was the only place opened and neither of us had eaten since lunch) while waiting in the emergency vet parking lot for our dog-ter.

the past 7 hours were a blur: meeting a puppy who was sweet to humans yet vicious to dogs, dropping sadie off at the er vet for surgery, taking david to the er to check on his dog bite, helping to find the runaway puppy and then having to identify him…and all i kept thinking is: if dogs could talk, sadie would probably be asking what she did to deserve this.

how selfish we were to want to disrupt our sweet family with a new fur baby.  besides, why would you need more when you already have the best?

sadie is our best only dog-ter.

pitiful sadie

(more photos can be see on my flickr photostream from my blog site, in case you are reading this post via email version.  i didn’t want to put them on this post since some of them are pretty gross.)
